Les Liaisons Dangereuses
Client: National Theatre Live
Hello Charlie were delighted to once again work with National Theatre Live on the Cinema Trailer for the Donmar’s eagerly awaited production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Having delivered a range of mood boards and ideas to both the National Theatre Live and the Donmar, we decided upon a unique concept involving a shoot with the 3 main cast members at the beautiful Tate Britain, whom allowed us the luxury of filming in one of their incredible galleries after hours. Despite strict time constraints due to the actors’ full on rehearsal schedule, we executed an organised, well scheduled shoot that didn’t interfere with either the shows rehearsals or the gallery’s requirements. Using the grandeur of the gallery, and choreography from Show Director Josie Rourke we were able to portray the seduction, intrigue and corruption all of which are at the centre of this play. Hello Charlie directed, edited and graded the piece, as well as designed the graphics, and with the addition of bespoke audio, specially composed by the show’s music designer, the final trailer was a powerful combination of conspiracy and passion heightening the anticipation of this sexually charged play. There has also been a mention of the Les Liaisons Dangereuses trailer published on the WhatsOnStage site: ‘By contrast, take the Donmar’s marketing for the Les Liaisons Dangereuses NT Live screening. ThoughTom Scutt’s stage design puts the cast in panniers and periwigs, the cinema trailer has Dominic West and Janet McTeer swanning around a gallery in slick modern dress. It looks sexy, contemporary and, yes, theatrical. Where the actual costumes might have been a barrier to non-theatregoing audiences, the advert might just tempt a few in. These adverts aren’t just selling a show. They’re selling an entire art-form - and they sit next to blockbuster films and fresh television shows. They have to be top quality.’
